Entrance Exam Guide

JEE Main, NEET-UG & MHT-CET — Syllabus, Paper Pattern & Prep Tips

Note: Exam duration, number of questions and marking schemes below reflect the pattern followed in recent years and are meant as a general planning guide. Exact details are notified fresh every year by NTA (JEE/NEET) and the State CET Cell (MHT-CET) — always cross-check the latest official information bulletin before finalising your strategy.

JEE Main — Overview

Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and as the qualifying stage for JEE Advanced (IITs). Held across two sessions in a year (January and April).

Syllabus

Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — the full 11th and 12th std syllabus, with roughly equal weightage given to both years. See our Chapter-wise Weightage page for the full Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics chapter-wise breakdown.

Paper Pattern (B.E./B.Tech — Paper 1)

SubjectQuestion TypeMarking Scheme
PhysicsMCQs + Numerical Value Questions+4 correct, -1 wrong MCQ (numericals: no negative)
ChemistryMCQs + Numerical Value Questions+4 correct, -1 wrong MCQ (numericals: no negative)
MathematicsMCQs + Numerical Value Questions+4 correct, -1 wrong MCQ (numericals: no negative)

Duration: 3 hours  |  Total marks: ~300 (100 per subject)  |  Mode: Computer-based online test

Paper-solving Strategy
  • Attempt Mathematics numericals first if you're faster there — they carry no negative marking risk once you're confident of the method.
  • Don't guess blindly on MCQs — the -1 penalty makes a wrong guess worse than skipping.
  • Physics numericals often test 2-3 concepts chained together — practice multi-concept problems, not just single-formula ones.
  • Time-box each subject to ~1 hour; move on and return later rather than getting stuck on one question.

NEET-UG — Overview

Conducted by NTA for admission to MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses across India. It is a single national-level, pen-and-paper exam (OMR-based).

Syllabus

Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany + Zoology) — full 11th and 12th std syllabus. Biology carries the highest weightage in the overall paper, so it's the highest-leverage subject for score improvement. See our Chapter-wise Weightage page for chapter-level detail.

Paper Pattern

SubjectNo. of QuestionsMarks
Physics45180
Chemistry45180
Botany45180
Zoology45180
Total180720

Duration: 3 hours 20 minutes  |  Marking: +4 correct, -1 wrong  |  All single-correct-answer MCQs

Paper-solving Strategy
  • Solve Biology first — it's the largest scoring section and builds early confidence and speed.
  • Aim to finish Chemistry (especially Inorganic) fastest since it's largely direct-recall.
  • Save Physics numericals for last — they typically take the longest per question.
  • With no choice/optional questions in the current pattern, accuracy matters more than ever — avoid speculative guessing.

MHT-CET — Overview

Conducted by the Maharashtra State CET Cell for admission to Engineering, Pharmacy and Agriculture courses within Maharashtra. Candidates choose the PCM group (Engineering/Pharmacy) or PCB group (Pharmacy/Agriculture) based on their target course.

Syllabus

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) or Biology (PCB) — drawn from the 11th and 12th std Maharashtra board syllabus, with a larger share of questions from the 12th std portion. See our Chapter-wise Weightage page for the full chapter list.

Paper Pattern

PaperSubject(s)QuestionsMarksDuration
Paper 1Mathematics (PCM group)50100 (2 marks/Q)90 min
Paper 2Physics & Chemistry100 (50+50)100 (1 mark/Q)90 min
Paper 3Biology (PCB group)100100 (1 mark/Q)90 min

All MCQs  |  No negative marking  |  Candidates attempt Paper 2 plus either Paper 1 (PCM) or Paper 3 (PCB)

Paper-solving Strategy
  • Since there's no negative marking, attempt every question — an educated guess is always worth it.
  • Maths questions carry double marks — prioritise speed and accuracy here for maximum score impact.
  • Physics & Chemistry share one paper with tight timing — practice switching between subjects quickly in mock tests.
  • MHT-CET questions tend to be more textbook-direct than NEET/JEE — thorough NCERT/state board practice pays off disproportionately.
Preparing for more than one exam? Since JEE, NEET and MHT-CET all draw from the same 11th/12th Physics-Chemistry-(Maths/Biology) syllabus, one disciplined revision cycle using our Chapter-wise Weightage guide covers all three — just adjust your practice mix (numericals vs. MCQ-speed vs. recall) based on which exam you're targeting next.
